Lost Pets: Names and Locations to Avoid!!!

I recently discovered PetAmberAlert.com. This website holds a database of thousands of pets over the past few years that have been reported to the website and is the most extensive database I have found. Let me preface my analyzation by saying that it is estimated that 10 million pets are lost in the United States each year. So far since January 1st of this year 830 pets have been reported lost to PetAmberAlert.com. Not exactly the 2.5 million that you would expect but still a large number of pets nonetheless. My guess is that posting lost pet signs throughout the neighborhood is still a preferred solution over using the internet. Anyhow, let's take a look at what I found. The majority of the pets reported lost were either cats or dogs however there was one tiger named Snot that was lost in Nashport, OH. So, maybe avoid Nashport, OH.

NAMES
Out of the 830 lost pets 535 of the pets' names were original. The most common pet name reported lost was a tie between Daisy and Lucy. Do these pets hate their names so much that they want to run away? Doubtful. Daisy ranked as the 4th most popular dog name of 2012 and Lucy ranked as the 7th most popular dog name and 8th most popular cat name. Unpopular names Ginger, Lilly, Harley, and Mia ran away often.

 

 

LOCATION
Out of the 609 different cities listed Houston, TX had the most number of pets reported lost. This is not too much of a stretch seeing that Houston is the 4th most populus city in the US. What strikes me as strange here is how many lost pets are from Miami. Miami, FL is the 44th most populus city yet has the second highest number of lost pets. Ten of the top twenty locations are either from Texas or Florida. Most of these top cities are also the most populated but they are also mostly in hot climates.

DATES
Below is a graph showing the number of pets reported lost on each day so far this year. March 14th was a bad day for pet owners. January 2nd and February 25th were also bad days. Nothing extraordinary about March 14th or February 25th but maybe a lot of pets were scared from all the fireworks on New Years Eve.
