According to an Actuate study, 49% of companies are not planning to even evaluate their big data, including 40% of companies that bring in over a billion dollars in revenue. Sadly, only 19% of companies have implemented big data, and 26% for the companies bringing in revenue in the billions. The graph expands on these statistics.
The problem lies in the imbalance of demand and talent. If a
company doesn’t believe in their talent to implement big data solutions, then
they simple won’t allocate as much of their resources into it.
The study noted that the top applications for big data were
customer insights, customer experience analysis, and marketing targeting.
Even though close to half of the overall companies that haven’t
implemented big data solutions, they still recognize its potential. The graph
below shows how companies think big data can help.
Just from analyzing both graphs, it’s pretty clear that
there is a significant disconnect from realizing and actually doing.

Thank you for posting these statistics. I found it very interesting that almost 50% of the companies studied have no intentions of using collected information for big data applications. As we know, there is a huge benefit from simply analyzing the trends in big data. I'm sure most of these $1B+ companies (40% of whom do not use Big Data) feel that they are successful without using the resources available in big data analytics. This could be true, but what is happening is the producers are losing focus on their goals because of revenue. How successful are these companies? Can they gauge their success simply through their revenue, while recognizing their lack of data analysis? The chart above even lists several ways in which the companies identify ways in which big data could be beneficial, yet the majority still do not fully utilize the information. How long will it be before companies can respect the benefits of big data analytics and no longer out weigh costs of big data experts with their usefulness? Companies already see the potential areas of implementing and with the continual popularity growth of big data analytics it might be utilized in the near future.
